LINCOLN — A tragic case of mistaken identity resulted in the death of a 20-year-old man early Christmas Eve morning outside an apartment complex in north Lincoln, according to Lincoln Police.
Captain Ben Miller reported that officers responded to the Bridgeport Apartments near 14th and Hilltop at approximately 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of multiple gunshots. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim on the grass on the south side of the building, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
During the investigation, police determined the victim and his 16-year-old brother had arrived at the apartment complex in separate vehicles. As the younger brother approached the building, he spotted someone in dark clothing and, recalling an earlier incident on December 21 when he was assaulted near 21st and K Streets, believed the person posed a threat. In fear for his safety, the 16-year-old fired multiple shots.
Investigators later confirmed the unknown figure was actually the older brother. Both individuals were armed, and the victim’s firearm was recovered at the scene.
This marks Lincoln’s eighth homicide of the year. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are interviewing witnesses. Anyone with information or video footage related to the incident is urged to contact Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.
