Former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Nebraska’s senior U.S. Senator, Deb Fischer, in her reelection bid, describing her as an “America First” conservative. In a post on Truth Social, the platform Trump launched in 2022, he praised Fischer’s role on the Senate Armed Services Committee and her efforts to protect the country from what he called “radical left” ideologies. Trump highlighted Fischer’s work in growing the economy, securing the border, and supporting the military, stating that she has his “complete and total endorsement.”
Fischer, a former state lawmaker and rancher from Valentine, is seeking her third term in the Senate and expressed her gratitude for Trump’s endorsement. She pledged to continue fighting for working families, lowering the cost of living, and supporting Nebraska agriculture.
Fischer faces a challenge from independent candidate Dan Osborn, a U.S. Navy veteran and former labor leader. A recent poll showed a tight race, with Fischer leading Osborn by just 1 percentage point. Despite this, nearly half of the poll’s respondents said they hadn’t heard enough about Osborn to form an opinion. Fischer has so far declined to debate Osborn, who has focused on his working-class roots and calls for tax cuts and an increased minimum wage.
Trump, in his endorsement, criticized Osborn, labeling him as a “Bernie Sanders Democrat” and warning that he would be detrimental to Nebraska’s values. Osborn, however, has positioned himself as a more independent candidate, supporting certain liberal policies but maintaining stances such as opposing student loan forgiveness and supporting the Second Amendment.
Fischer’s campaign has drawn criticism from Osborn’s camp for her past stance against Trump during the 2016 election and for seeking a third term despite previously promising to serve only two. Fischer won Nebraska’s statewide primary in May and is one of several GOP senators seeking reelection in November.
