Evelyn Lucille was born May 20, 1945, in a farmhouse in Valley County, Nebraska to Floyd DeWayne and Violet Lucille (Young) Cone. The family moved to a farm in Garfield County, east of Burwell where Evelyn spent her childhood and received her early education at Midvale. In 1963, they moved to Burwell where Evelyn graduated from Burwell High School in 1963 and worked as the first cashier at Jack & Jill Grocery Store.
On February 4, 1968, Evelyn was united in marriage to the local hardware dealer, Rex Frederick Pinckney. The couple was blessed with two sons, Kelly Ray and Michael Rex. Evelyn and Rex owned and operated Pinckney Hardware for 40 years. Following the sale of the store, she went to work for Spelts Hardware until her retirement.
Evelyn’s passion was music as a singer, drummer and guitarist. She was in a country western band with her husband, Rex and sister and brother-in-law, Dixie and Bill Weber; first as “Town and Country 4” and later, “Sand Hills Express”. The children of both families joined the band, and they held Family Shows all over the area. In the 1980’s, Evelyn and her sister, Dixie, received many music awards, including the Country Music Festival Award, Newcomer’s Award, and Duo of the Year Award. In 1983, Evelyn and Dixie traveled to Nashville and cut a record on the Johnny Dollar label.
In October of 2010, sadly Rex passed away. Later Evelyn met a widower, Harry Landaw and the couple was married on July 19, 2014. Evelyn and Harry enjoyed serving in churches around the area; with Harry preaching and Evelyn using her gift of music. They enjoyed ten years together and had the opportunity to travel many places within the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan.
Evelyn was an active member of the Burwell Baptist Church where she sang on the Worship Team and served as Church Treasurer. She was a member of PEO Chapter CJ, served as the Chairman of the Community Memorial Health Center and was a member of both the Burwell Chamber Board and Burwell Economic Development Board.
Along with her passion for music, Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and singing to them. She was very active in community affairs and loved making friends and helping all the people that came into the hardware store.
