Wayne Lyle Alloway “Lyle”, age 93 of Burwell, NE entered the gates of Heaven on January 29, 2022. Lyle was born on December 19, 1928 to James Lyle and Flora Lizzie (McGill) Alloway. He graduated from Burwell High school in 1947 as valedictorian of his class and was captain of the football team. After graduation he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for a year and then moved to Nampa, Idaho to attend Northwest Nazarene College (NNC). He married Ruth Nichols August 5, 1949 at the Methodist Church in Burwell, graduating from NNC magna cum laude with a BA in chemistry in 1952. After receiving his BA, Lyle and Ruth moved to Chicago, Illinois where Lyle attended Northwestern Medical School. After receiving his MD, they attended The Salvation Army School for Officers Training in San Francisco, California and were commissioned as officers (ordained ministers) in May, 1958.
In 1958, they were appointed as medical missionaries to the Salvation Army Catherine Booth Hospital in Nagercoil, South India where Lyle was the Assistant Chief Medical Officer, then became the Chief Medical Officer and also headed up the eye department. Lyle and Ruth served in India for over 19 years.
They returned to the United States in 1977 where he served as a staff ophthalmologist at the Booth Memorial Medical Center, Flushing, NY. In 1978, Lyle opened a general practice in Burwell and practiced until 1986.
At the request of the Salvation Army, Lyle and Ruth went to Zimbabwe, Africa in 1986. Lyle served as Chief Medical Officer at the Salvation Army Howard Hospital until 1990. In 1991 Lyle and Ruth went to Labrador Canada for two months where Lyle filled in as a general surgeon. They then returned to Flushing, NY where he served as the Medical Director at The Salvation Army Booth Memorial Health Center in Jamaica, NY until 1992. The Alloway’s then retired from the Salvation Army and returned to Burwell where Lyle worked for Ord Family Health Center until his retirement in 2000.
The Alloway’s traveled around the world twice, have been on every major continent except South America and have worked in five different countries. Lyle was a skilled ophthalmologist and general surgeon. He was respected by his peers, patients, and community. He spent his life sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and he gave his life to serving others. Lyle was a loving and devoted husband of 72 years and was often seen holding his wife’s hand wherever they went.
He was also a loving and caring father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who loved and knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Alloway, his children, LeAnn Rowse of Burwell, Wayne Alloway (Analise) of Lincoln, Lizbeth (Chris) Eberhardt of Grand Island and Lenore (Mike) Bellamy of Maryville, MO. Grandchildren, Lyle Rowse, Sandra Rowse, Clark Rowse, Rosanne Rowse, Sarah Hansen, Peter Alloway, Rachel Biberdorf, Jonathan Dearmont, Mark Dearmont, Laurel Thomsen, Elena Bellamy, Noah Bellamy, son-in-law from India, Sundaram and his children Jessy, William, James, and Wayne, 5 great grandchildren with 3 on the way, and many nieces and nephews.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Jim Rowse, grandson, Nicholas Rowse, adopted daughter from India, Sukumarie, sisters Ardath Kusek and Anita McClintic, and brothers Robert and Norval Alloway.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Pastor Serene Samuel and Pastor Wayne Alloway will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Women. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
