Kent Ellis Hornickel, 80, of Ord passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City, Nebraska after a life well lived.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church south of Ord. Rev. Dr. Jeff D. Hale and Pastor Jay Powell will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Mira Valley Evangelical United Methodist Church or the Family’s Choice. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Kent Ellis Hornickel was born February 11, 1941, to Elmer and Florence (Koelling) Hornickel at their home in Mira Valley, Nebraska. Kent grew up on the family farm where he attended country school through the eighth grade at Valleyside District 10. He then attended Ord High School, graduating in 1958.
Kent played football while attending Hastings College and returned to Mira Valley in 1960 to farm with his dad and brother, Mervin. He served with the National Guards from 1959-1963.
On September 23, 1962, he married Twilla Harkness. They had 5 children, Kathleen, Steven, Janice, Debra, and Janelle. His faith, family, and farm were the center of his life. He gave his heart to Jesus at the age of 12 at a camp meeting and until his death had a desire for others to experience this relationship.
They lived on the farm south of Ord until moving into town in 2005. Kent was active throughout his lifetime serving in numerous capacities on church, school, township and co-op boards.
Kent’s companionship will always be cherished by his wife, Twilla, of 59 years and his three children and their spouses, Kathleen (Mark) Schmidt of Franklin, Steve (Sue) Hornickel of Ord, and Janice (Gary) Howard of Ord; twelve grandchildren, Jamie (Tim) Holmes, Kelsey (Keith) Yeomans, Kris Hornickel (Caroline Cook), Kale Schmidt (Tamara Bolar), Emily (Austin) Braun, Taylor Hornickel (Chris Wiedmeier), Richelle Schmidt, Melody Howard (Jason Johnson), Kasey Hornickel, April Wagner, Jayden Hornickel and Trysten Hornickel; ten great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Sydnee, and Brooklyn Holmes, Destanee, Bronc and Riggin Bolar, Trigg Cunningham, Maya, Kenadie and Maddox Yeomans with another one on the way; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Luella (Dan) Spilinek, Zola (Dennis) Johnson, Phyllis (Earl) Mottl, Gary (Pat) Harkness and Paul (Janet) Harkness and Delores Hornickel; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Willard and Thelma Harkness; brother and sister-in-law, Mervin and Geraldine Hornickel; and daughters, Debra and Janelle Hornickel.
