JERRY SCHMITT
Gerald W. “Jerry” Schmitt, 82, of Ord passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Pastor Adam Archer will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented by the Ord VFW Post #7029 and American Legion Post #38. The family will greet friends at 9:30 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the Church. The family prefers that the memorial gifts are directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Ord Volunteer Fire and Rescue Unit in lieu of flowers. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
For the health and safety of others, facial masks are recommended.
Gerald Wayne was born August 28, 1938, at Oak, Nebraska to Gottleib W. and Emma Marie (Herman) Schmitt. He was raised on the farm near Oak; attending Oak Elementary School then graduating from Nelson High School.
Jerry served in the United States Army from November of 1956 to August of 1958; and was stationed in Germany.
On February 14, 1964, Jerry was united in marriage to LaVonne Holmes at Ord, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Ord and raised their two sons, Dennis and Bruce.
Jerry made his career with the Nebraska State Patrol for thirty years. He began as a Patrolman in August of 1962 and retired on December 31, 1992. Jerry served for two terms at the Nebraska State Legislature, from January of 1993 to December of 2000.
Jerry was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the VFW Post #7029. He enjoyed Nebraska History, Archelogy and Indian Artifacts. He spent time hunting, fishing and watching World of Outlaws Racing and Rodeos.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, LaVonne of Ord; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis and Shannon Schmitt of Olathe, KS and Bruce Schmitt of Albuquerque, NM; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Raulo Damian of Lincoln and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Schmitt of Oak, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Jarvis Lautenschlager; and a brother, Victor Schmitt.
