James Wilsey Roberts, 92, of Burwell, Nebraska died June 25, 2020 at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Jim was born March 4, 1928 in Fall River County, South Dakota to Mayfield and Rita (Wilsey) Roberts.
Jim entered the United States Navy on June 13, 1945 and was honorably discharged on May 25, 1946.
Jim married Laura “Scotty” Schildhauer on June 20, 1947 in Chadron, Nebraska. They farmed southwest of Hay Springs, Nebraska. In 1955
Jim became a brand inspector and moved to O’Neill, Nebraska. In 1956 they moved to Ogallala, Nebraska until 1962, when they moved to Burwell. Jim retired in the early 1990’s.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and playing pool. He was a long-time member of the American Legion Post, the Burwell Fire Department and the United Methodist Church.
Jim is survived by his wife Scotty Roberts of Burwell. Three sons, Ken and Beth Roberts of Hildreth, Nebraska, Doug Roberts of Pueblo, Colorado and Dewy and Melodie Roberts of Burwell, Nebraska. Six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a brother, Bob and Barb Roberts of Cambridge, Nebraska.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents. Three brothers, Vic, Wib and Wayne. Three sisters, LaVon, Roberta and Hilda and three nieces.
Jim’s wishes were to be cremated. There will be a memorial service on Monday, July 13, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Burwell, Nebraska. There will be a visitation on Sunday, July 12 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Pastor Dennis Davenport and Pastor Serene Samuel will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the new American Legion building or the Burwell Fire Department.
