A Nebraska school principal was found dead in a Nevada hotel room after being charged with second-degree sexual abuse by a school employee.
According to a joint press release from Logan County Attorney Andrew Van Velson and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began on January 20 when a concerned parent contacted Sheriff Sean Carson. The parent reported that a Stapleton Public Schools student had been inappropriately contacted on school grounds by Jeremiah Johnson, who served as both the school’s principal and athletic director.
Authorities stated that the incident took place in a secluded area of the school and involved physical contact and commentary that led law enforcement to believe Johnson was making a sexual advance on the student. The student was able to escape without further incident. Following an investigation, the Logan County Attorney filed criminal charges against Johnson.
Law enforcement in Nevada later located Johnson’s vehicle, prompting authorities to issue an arrest warrant. When officers entered a hotel room registered under his name, they found Johnson deceased. With his death, the state’s warrant was recalled, and the case was dismissed.
In response, law enforcement officials urged parents to be vigilant about their children’s activities and interactions, warning that predatory behavior is becoming more common, even among individuals in positions of authority. They encouraged parents to discuss appropriate and inappropriate interactions with their children, including recognizing warning signs such as gift-giving, excessive electronic messaging, and communication outside normal times and places.
Authorities emphasized the importance of community awareness in protecting children and encouraged the public to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement.
