HASTINGS, Neb. – A valid ID is now mandatory to vote in Tuesday’s election. While forgetting your ID could delay the final results, you still have options.
For the first time this Tuesday, Nebraska voters are required to present a photo ID at the polls.
Should you arrive without an ID, you are permitted to leave the polling location to retrieve it.
If obtaining an ID on election day is not possible, you may cast a provisional ballot.
However, Adams County Election Commissioner Ramona Thomas warns that this could postpone the certification of results in tight races.
“Election night results are always unofficial,” Thomas explained. “What’s different this year is that voters without a photo ID at their polling place have a seven-day window to present one at their local election commission office.”
If this applies to you, your vote won’t be counted until you submit a valid photo ID.
“We must wait to count any of those votes until all ID verifications are completed,” Thomas added.
If you missed the registration deadline for the primary election last Friday, you can still register for the upcoming November general election.
For any questions about voter registration or the new ID requirement, contact your local election commission office.
