GRAND ISLAND — Grand Island Police Department officers were called to Best Buy on W. 13th St. around 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, following reports of counterfeit currency used by an unknown male attempting to purchase items. The suspect left the scene before police arrived, and the case is currently under investigation.
This incident is part of a series of events involving counterfeit $100 bills reported across Grand Island since early 2024. Among the notable incidents:
- On Thursday, February 8, Pham’s Coffee and Boba reported a counterfeit $100 bill at 2:24 p.m.
- That same evening, a man attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill at the Olive Garden on Allen Dr.
- Between February 8 and 9, a fake $100 bill was reported at a Qdoba restaurant.
- On the evening of February 8, Subway at 1723 W. 2nd St. also reported a counterfeit $100 passed by an unknown male.
- The following morning, Advanced Auto Parts discovered a counterfeit $100 in their ending cash batch during a routine check, which was confirmed as fake by their bank.
- Later on February 9, First Interstate Bank at 1811 W. 2nd St. reported a counterfeit $100 bill that had been used at O’Reilly’s Auto Parts on 2024 S. Locust St.
- On Saturday, February 10, a counterfeit $100 bill was used at the Dollar General at 2121 N. Broadwell Ave. This bill was identified as a movie prop.
No suspects have been identified in these cases. These incidents underscore a troubling pattern of counterfeit currency circulation within the community. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Grand Island Police Department.
