GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A prominent Grand Island manufacturing business is making a six-figure donation to a local college.
Central Community College announced the $750,000 gift from Hornady Manufacturing on Friday. The gift establishes the Hornady Criminal Justice Fund and was given to celebrate the company’s 75th year in business. The fund will support criminal justice program scholarships and grants.
“Donating to the Central Community College Foundation and creating the Hornady Criminal Justice Fund demonstrates our commitment to the college and the community,” president Steve Hornady said in a news release. “It shows the pride we have in Central Community College and reflects our desire to support CCC and its programs.”
As part of the gift, the college is naming its crime house at the Grand Island campus as the Hornady Crime House. The house opened last year and provides real-life scenarios in a simulated environment. It is used by CCC students, area law enforcement agencies and other community groups.
“The experiential learning that the Hornady Crime House offers to CCC’s criminal justice students is a great supplement to the teaching provided in the classroom,” criminal justice program director Michael David said. “This type of hands-on experience is as real as it gets and shows the students some of what they will face once they get into law enforcement, a dream career for some. Hornady’s generous donation gives both the crime house and the CCC’s criminal justice program a huge boost.”
Hornady manufactures bullets, ammunition, reloading tools and accessories. The Hornady family was inducted into the Nebraska Business Hall of Fame this year.
“This generous gift exemplifies Hornady’s commitment to the community and will have a substantial impact on our students and law enforcement agencies for years to come,” CCC-Grand Island President Dr. Marcie Kemnitz said.
