Victoria Lucille was born Sunday, January 7, 1923, to John Anton and Anna (Grzegorzewski) Setlik on a farm in Garfield County, Nebraska, north of Fort Hartsuff, joining five older sisters. She was the seventh of nine children, raised in a Polish Catholic family. Her father immigrated to the US from Poland in 1900, marrying her mother in 1910, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Elyria. Her grandfather, Walenty “William” Grzegorzewski was one of the founders of the parish. Vicki was named after two of her mother’s sisters, Victoria Duda and Lucy Sleva.
She grew up in rural Garfield and Valley counties, the family moved to a farm near Arcadia when Vicki was a teenager. She attended country schools until March 1939 when her younger sister, Valeria wanted to attend high school in Arcadia. Her father would only let Valeria attend, if Vicki accompanied her. Together they graduated from Arcadia High School in 1942.
She took normal training in high school, but after graduating moved to California. There she cleaned houses, returning to Nebraska after six months. Sadly, her father passed away in October of 1943, and she returned to the farm to help her mother. In August of 1944, she joined the War effort and began work in Grand Island at the Cornhusker Ordinance Plant; working on Line #3 assembling bombs and artillery shells.
After the War ended, she returned to Valley County. She met her future husband, Lumir at a dance as the Blue Skirt Waltz played. Lumir had returned to Nebraska after serving in the US Army from 1942-1945 in the South Pacific. They were married in Loup City on November 25, 1947. The couple lived on a farm east of Arcadia until 1952, when they moved to North Loup. There Lumir managed the Co-op Elevator and they raised their family of eight children. Lumir retired in 1984, and they enjoyed 44 years of marriage, before he passed away in September 1992.
Vicki stayed in her own home until 2004, then moved to No-Lo Villa enjoying a downsized apartment. Later at the age of 99 she moved to Rose Lane Home in Loup City. She celebrated her 100th birthday there in January of 2022 with family and friends.
Vicki was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, supporting Patriotic endeavors. She enjoyed listening to Polka music and reading – later in life listening to audio books. She was an avid letter writer, regularly corresponding with her sisters and many other family members. She raised a large vegetable garden to support her family and she enjoyed her flowers. Vicki was a wonderful cook, serving weekly Sunday dinners to all who could find a place at her table – even when the meal was spread across the kitchen, dining and living rooms. Freshly baked dinner rolls, pies and kolace were her specialties and are remembered fondly by each of her grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting; watching and feeding her birds.
Survivors include her eight children and special niece, Gary (Deb) Cadek of North Loup, Patricia (Robert) Doggett of Lakeside, Sue (Charlie) Keezer of Monroe, Randy (Deb) Cadek of North Loup, Nancy (Chuck) Bruha of Scotia, Shirl (Neal) Kratochvil of Columbus, Alan (Lisa) Cadek, Emil Cadek and Larry Cadek all of North Loup; 13 grandchildren: Jason, Cory, Cyle, Brian, Ann, Stacie, Tracie, Cody, Melanie, Joey, Maddie, Reilly and Shelley; 13 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; a brother Chester Setlik of Dannebrog; two sisters-in-law, Rose Cadek of Wahoo and Marie (Ron) Brauer of Tampa, Florida; special friends, Margie and Rich Gallegos of North Loup; and a host of relatives and friends.
