Dale Lewis Karre, DVM, 96, of Ord passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023; at the Ord First United Methodist Church. Reverend Spenser Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dr. Dale Karre Scholarship Fund at Ord High School. Dale Lewis was born July 16, 1927, at Scotia, Nebraska to Lewis and Lola (Welsh) Karre. He was raised in Scotia and graduated from Scotia High School in 1944.
Dale continued his education at Colorado University, graduating in 1948. On September 5, 1948, Dale married the love of his life, Shirley Dea Smith at Scotia, Nebraska. The couple made their home on the west edge of Ord. Dale was a dedicated Veterinarian at the Ord Animal Clinic; practicing for over 50 years. He continued to do the bookwork at the clinic until the age of 90.
Dale was a member of the Ord First United Methodist Church, Ord Elks Lodge; and the Masonic Lodge. He was involved in the Nebraska and American Veterinarian’s Associations and served as the President of the Nebraska Association.
His civic duties included serving on the Ord City Council for 5 years, Ord School Board for 15 years; and was The Ord City Mayor for 6 years. He also held many offices within the Church and Board of Examiners of Veterinarian Medicine.
Dale was a lifelong learner who made everyone around him feel special. He was a Hospice volunteer; and for 25 years he touched the lives of the Ord Elementary first grade students with his involvement in their reading program. He was a generous blood donor; donating his last pint on his 92nd birthday to make it to 25 gallons of blood. Dale enjoyed the outdoors and walking. He was a participant in the Nebraska State Games and the Ord Country Run for many years.
Dale is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy and Mike Hitchcock of Ainsworth, and Kathy Kamarad of Hastings; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Cindy of West Cliff, Colorado and Bill and Renee of Ord; twelve grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lois Swanson of Ericson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley who passed away on February 12, 2007; a son-in-law, Gary Kamarad; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Scotty Love and Norma and Buster Sarno; and two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Don Smith and George and Shirley Smith.
