Sophia May Porter, 91, of Burwell, Nebraska died September 22, 2023 at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Inurnment will be at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery in Bassett, Nebraska. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the Burwell Baptist Church in Burwell, Nebraska with Pastor Joel Wentworth officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Baptist Church. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Sophia was born June 6, 1932 in Long Pine, Nebraska to Roy and Eleanor (Sawyer) Porter, the oldest of nine children. She was raised in the Cuba Community northwest of Bassett. She attended District # 29 school in Rock County. Sophia accepted Jesus as her Savior at the age of twelve, while attending Camp Witness Bible Camp. She taught Vacation Bible School and counseled in summer Bible camps during her teen years. She graduated from Rock County High School in 1950 and then attended Grace Bible College, graduating in 1955 with a BA. She then went to Wayne State College and graduated with a BA in 1957. Sophia then went to Kenya, West Africa as a missionary with Africa Inland Mission in 1958. She served forty-four years as a teacher and Headmistress of Girls Schools, retiring from mission, but not from ministry, and moved to Burwell in 2002. Her heart was always in Africa.
Sophia was a member of the Burwell Baptist Church and was very active in church activities. She led Bible studies and had Good News Clubs for kids in her home. She worked in AWANA and After 5 Club. She loved sewing, reading and cooking.
Sophia moved to Park View Plaza in 2019. She served her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ faithfully her entire life.
Sophia is survived by her siblings, Bernice Foss of Lewiston, Idaho, Lawrence and Alberta Porter of Neligh, Nebraska, Thelma Falck of Boise, Idaho, Alice Cammack of Long Pine, Nebraska, Robert and Marianne Porter of Burwell, Nebraska, Wally Porter of Burwell, Nebraska, Walter Ray Porter of Bassett, Nebraska and Charles and Sue Porter of Omaha, Nebraska and nieces and nephews.
Sophia was preceded in death by her parents. Four sisters-in-law, Marlyn Porter, Glenice Porter, Sharon Porter and Janice Porter and two brothers-in-law, Clarence Foss and Larry Cammack and numerous nieces and nephews.
