Dean J. Rasmussen, 93, of Hastings, formerly a North Loup resident passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, Nebraska.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the Ord Memorial Chapel in Ord, Nebraska. Pastor Bruce Phillips will officiate. Private Burial will be held at the Hillside Cemetery in North Loup at a later date. Visitation will be on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Family’s Choice to be designated at a later date. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Dean was born the oldest of twin boys on May 13, 1929, on the family farm near Cotesfield, Nebraska to Rasmus and Axelina (Boilesen) Rasmussen. He was raised on the family farm; receiving his education at Cotesfield and graduating from Scotia High School in 1947. He was an outstanding track and field athlete in high school
Dean continued his education in Grand Island and graduated from Business School. On December 16, 1950, he was united in marriage to Ellora “Cookie” Cook at the United Methodist Church in North Loup, Nebraska. The couple farmed at Cotesfield until 1973 when they moved to North Loup. Dean owned and operated the Jack & Jill Grocery Store for 13 years. He also worked as a grain elevator inspector for the State of Nebraska and a Custodian for the school. Dean spent the last 20 of his work years at the Grocery Kart in Ord. Dean and Cookie have made their home in Hastings since 2017.
Dean was a community minded man and was involved in many capacities. His service included the Cotesfield School Board, Valley County Hospital Board, Danish Brotherhood #288, North Loup Lions Club, North Loup Fire Department, Popcorn Days Committee and North Loup United Methodist Church. He was a member of the SWCD which became the NRD Board that he served on for 45 years and was inducted into the NRD Hall of Fame in 2017.
Dean was the recipient of the Popcorn Days First Kernel Award and an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska.
Dean enjoyed gardening, reading, spending time with his family and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He worked the line chain at the NLS football games and was the softball announcer for local town teams.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Ellora “Cookie” of Hastings; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Cathy of Lincoln and David and Sandi of Denton, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Dave Nelson of Hastings; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Robert; three brothers, Dwain who died in WWII, his twin brother, Dennis and Robert; two sisters, infant Muriel and Verna Wells; a great-granddaughter, Carah Lang; and his parents-in-law, Victor and Dorothy Cook.
