Lumir Frank Bruha was born at home in Northwest Valley County on June 5, 1932, to Bessie (Mach) & Stanley Bruha. He grew up on the family farm; helping farm by using horses. He graduated from Burwell High School in 1950. Lumir was drafted into the US Army in April 1953; and served during the Korean War, stationed at Fairbanks Alaska. Lumir was a cook in the Army and was a Sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge in April 1955.
Upon his return home, he married Darlene Paider on June 1, 1955, at the Valley County Courthouse. They made their home on a farm west of Elyria, where they raised their four children, Debbie, Kathy, Eugene, and Bethene. The couple raised cows, pigs, and chickens; his passion was his cows. They sold the cream for income and sometimes traded milk for eggs. Lumir was one of the first ones in the area to start a hay hauling business to supplement his income. Lumir farmed until retirement and the couple moved into Ord in September 2019.
Lumir was a member of the District 32 School Board, and served as President for many of those years. He was a lifetime member of the ZCBJ Lodge #112.
He lived through many tornados, blizzards and floods. In his later years, he stayed involved in farming with what he called his “Tractor Therapy.” Lumir loved spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, and friends. During his last days, he was truly blessed to be able to meet his newest great-granddaughter.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Darlene of Ord; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Elwin Graves of Burwell, Kathy and Dan Timmons of Scotia, and Bethene and Allen Merithew of Chapman; family friend, Janet Chalupa of Ord; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albin Bruha of Ord; a sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Bill Payne of St. Paul; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Eugene Bruha; sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and Jimmy Kolar; sister-in-law, Alice Bruha; brother-in-law, Jerome Gawrych; and numerous nieces and nephews.
