On May 12 in Burwell, the depression era like dust storm hit around 3:20 p.m. It was travelling at 89 mph and was destroying many things in its path. Even after the storm the strength of the winds kept impacting the area. Burwell Rodeo President Jess Helgoth said he was trying to get his livestock secured when everything happened. Region 26 Emergency management and 911 Dispatch director, Alma Beland, said the Burwell area was not the only one impacted in Central Nebraska. The storm knocked down trees and overturned pivots and cars as well. Beland said it could take a while for all areas to get their electricity back. she said she will get in contact with the power company to figure that out. A place that was severely impacted was the arena where the Nebraska Big Rodeo happens and just celebrated its 100th year a year ago. Helgoth said that an insurance company would be out to inspect the cite and after that his team would get to work immediately to get it cleaned up and ready for the summer event season. “Everything will be fine for the rodeo, we’ll have a rodeo.” Helgoth said.
