James Leon was born June 6, 1939, at Greeley County, Nebraska to DeLoss and Gladys (Stevens) Grantham. He was raised in Greeley County and graduated from Scotia High School in 1957.
Leon lived most of his life on the family farm East of Scotia. He became a resident at the Greeley Care Home and Assisted Living in 2017, where he enjoyed getting to know his caregivers, liked the occasional musical entertainment and looked forward to weekly Bible Study.
Leon accepted Christ as his Savior early in life and made it a priority to attend church services where he served as an usher and contributed special music on his tenor saxophone.
Leon loved playing recreational softball on town teams and church league. He had vivid memories of players he faced and the games in which he participated.
Leon followed the local sports teams as well as the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Kansas City Royals. Leon was endlessly curious about people and had a gift for remembering names, hometowns, family relationships and whether any of their relatives played ball. He could visit with anyone about sports, classic country music, farming or Hereford cattle pedigrees.
Leon will be missed by his second cousins in the extended Grantham and Stevens families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Donivan, Marvin, Lavoin and Orvin.
