Mervin Ray Scofield, Sr., 84, of David City, Nebraska died October 4, 2021 at the Butler County Health Care Center Hospital in David City, Nebraska.
A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell, Nebraska. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Pastor JB Sikes will officiate. Inurnment will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell, Nebraska. Memorials are suggested to the David City Senior Center.
Mervin was born January 17, 1937 to Earl and Katherine (Bartos) Scofield. He went through the eighth grade at Westside District 13 and graduated from Burwell High School in the class of 1955. He spent his growing up years on his parent’s farm, learning work skills that would stay with him all his life.
Mervin married Glayda Butcher on January 29, 1956 in Burwell.
Mervin worked various jobs in different cities. He enjoyed playing cards and coaching men’s and women’s softball. He loved camping. When he got set up, the area was filled with other campers ready to “Play Ball”. Everyone in the campground was ready to play, watch and cheer. He was baptized in the Christian Church and he assisted in the youth group. He was a 4–H leader and a member of the Sod House Society, Odd Fellows, Encampment and Patriotic Militants Lodges in which he held various offices. He volunteered many places including the David City Senior Center and he was a camp host volunteer at Nebraska State Parks.
Mervin is survived by his wife Glayda Scofield of David City, Nebraska. Four children, Mervin Scofield, Jr. of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Sherril and Dennis Tolen of Grand Island, Nebraska, Kelly and Dave Davis of Grand Island, Nebraska and Annette and Gary Rudy of Greeley, Colorado. Three grandchildren, Seth and Amanda Tolen and Grace, and Anthony and Melissa Tolen and Jacob and Angelica and Matt Weaver and Sephiroth. Two brothers, Larry and Kim Scofield of California and Ronnie and Susan Scofield of Verdigre, Nebraska.
Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Donna. Two brothers, Harold Scofield and Orin Scofield. Three sisters, Catherine Ritter, Vernie Clark and Ella Mae McIntosh. Two great grandchildren, Parker Tolen and Dylan Tolen
