Eugene Allen “Shorty” Gross, 87, of Burwell, Nebraska died March 20, 2021 at CHI Health St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska.
A graveside memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Pastor JB Sikes will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Burwell Fire Department Ambulance Fund or the Burwell Legion Post #298 building fund. Hitchcock Funeral home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Shorty was born February 16, 1934 in Ord, Nebraska to Ludvick and Agnes (Psota) Gross. He was the youngest of eight children.
Shorty graduated from Ord High School in 1953. He entered the United States Army on May 29, 1956 and was honorably discharged on May 7, 1958.
Shorty moved to Idaho where he drove a truck for Suburban Propane Company hauling propane across the mountains for about 25 years. He was also an auctioneer.
Shorty moved to Burwell in 1997 to be a caregiver to his siblings. He drove a truck for local businesses and worked at the Burwell Livestock Market. He enjoyed walking, making salsa and sauerkraut, canning, gardening, eating and most of all his family time.
Shorty is survived by his wife Rita Gross of Pocatello, Idaho. Three children, Sandy Lewis of Estacada, Oregon, Mark Gross of Maui, Hawaii and Steve and Stephanie Gross of Colbert, Washington. Five grandchildren. His local family, Renaye Bonsall, Randy and Linda Gross, Ron Gross and Rhonda Maxson and Nick Jeffres. A brother, Dean Gross of Ord, Nebraska. Two sisters, Clara Jones of Ord, Nebraska and Doris Dlugosh of Seattle, Washington and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents. A brother LaVern “Curly” Gross. Sisters, Marie and Mike Sok, Louise and Elwood Rassett and Mildred and Mel Jonas. A sister-in-law, Lila Gross and two brothers-in-law, Leonard Dlugosh and Norris Jones.
