Mary Kathryn “Kay” Novotny, 68, of Comstock passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 7, 2021, at the Valley County Health System Hospital in Ord. Private Family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Father Scott Harter will be the Celebrant. Interment will be in the National Bohemian Cemetery west of Ord. Friends can sign the register book on Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. To honor the wishes of the family memorials are suggested to the Family’s Choice to be determined later, in lieu of flowers. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Kay was born on November 20, 1952, to Robert Rease and Wilma (Stanton) Rease. She grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln Pius X. She then went on to study Elementary Education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. It was at Lincoln where she met James “Jim” Novotny.
Jim and Kay were married on December 14, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ. Afterwards they moved to Omaha and she began her teaching career in the Ralston Public School District. A few years later, in 1982, they moved to Ord, Nebraska. She started teaching at Ord Public Schools in 1983, where she spent her career teaching 1st and 4th grade changing the lives of countless students in the community. She was loved by all her students and colleagues.
Kay was a member of P.E.O, and served on the Hospital Board Foundation. Beyond that she loved golfing, traveling, sewing, and especially time spent with her family. She was a sports fanatic and was always up for watching any game, specifically the Husker football games. Her grandchildren meant the world to her and she was the driving force of countless memories. Some of the fondest memories include the amazing blankets that she so meticulously crafted, her amazing meals including her famous macaroni and cheese, puppy chow and her ability to always show up with delicious homemade cookies. She had a special talent that included shopping, where she was a professional at finding amazing deals. Among all of those things she was also deeply rooted in her Catholic faith.
Survivors include husband, Jim Novotny of Comstock, NE; three children and eight beloved grandchildren. Kay’s Family includes, Bob and Lara Novotny; children, Rease, Zachary, Brooke, Samuel and expected child, of Overland Park, KS; Jeremy and Kara (Novotny) Baker; children, Micah, Baylor and Jada, of Omaha, NE; and Patrick and Laura (Novotny) Overby; child, Lucas of Omaha, NE; and a sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Tim Shaw of Lincoln, NE.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Wylma (Stanton) Rease.
