Glenice Rose (Benton) Porter, daughter of Donald and Alta (Johnson) Benton, passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell on July 20, 2020. She was born on April 17, 1941 in Burwell, Nebraska in the Dr. Cram Hospital (which is now the Burwell Museum).
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2020 at the Cedar Creek Bible Church north of Burwell. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Pastor Rob Pearson and Pastor Dave Moody will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to the family for a later designation.
Glenice spent her early childhood on a ranch in southern Holt county, attending grade school at Pine Valley School District 226 in Holt County. She graduated from Burwell High School in the class of 1959.
Glenice accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior at an early age becoming a member of Cedar Creek Berean Fundamental Church. She taught Sunday school, Bible school and served as Jr. Sunday School Superintendent for a time. She thoroughly enjoyed working with children.
After high school Glenice was employed on her father’s ranch and babysitting for neighbors.
On June 18, 1961 Glenice married Robert Porter. To this union 2 children were born, Richard and Cherylen.
Robert and Glenice continued to work for her father until his passing, then for her mother until they sold the ranch. Soon after, Glenice started a house cleaning business. In 1999 she began working at the Burwell Nursing Home. She continued there until health reasons forced her into retirement.
Glenice spent the following years at home until failing health placed her at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Glenice loved to bake. Every Saturday morning her home was filled with the wonderful smells of fresh baked bread, dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls. She was deeply involved with Ladies Missionary Circle at Cedar Creek Berean Fundamental Church and was President for several years. She also attended Homemakers Extension Club, which met monthly in ladies’ homes.
Glenice was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Alta Benton. She is survived by her husband Robert, sister Sharon (Benton) and Wallace Porter of Burwell, son Richard and Donna (Peterson) of Burwell, daughter Cherylen and Nathan Gift of Peabody, KS, grandchildren Lyndee (Porter) and Chris Heemstra of Ames, IA, Holly (Porter) and Charley Stout of Burwell, James Porter of Beaver Crossing, NE, Erin (Gift) and Justin Reiswig of Wichita, KS, Sara (Gift) and Trace Woods of Garden City, KS, Philip and Allie (Moore) Gift of Augusta, KS, Nicholas Gift of Peabody, KS, and 6 great grandchildren.
