Husker senior Haley Thiele captured her second Nebraska Women’s Amateur Championship in the last three years with a 54-hole tournament total of 220 (+10) to win by eight strokes at the York Country Club on Friday.
Thiele (Wahoo) surged to a 12-stroke lead early in the final round by torching the course with a two-under-par 34 on the front nine. She managed a 42 on the back to finish the day with a six-over 76.
Fellow Huskers Kirsten Baete (Beatrice) and Megan Whittaker (Elkhorn) tied for third at 230. Baete, the 2016 Nebraska Girls’ Amateur Champion, shot a final-round 78. Whittaker, a two-time Nebraska Girls’ Match Play Champion, matched Thiele with a final-round 76 on Friday. Baete and Whittaker will both be sophomores for the Big Red and new head coach Lisa Johnson in 2019-20.
