James was born May 11, 1943, at the Army Hospital in Abilene, Texas to John B. and Frances (Thompson) Twyman. He was raised in Indiana where he also received his education.
While serving on the USS Enterprise while in the Navy Jim and Phyllis began corresponding by mail through one of his Navy buddies whose wife was working with Phyllis in Denver, CO. He wrote letters everyday and after his discharge one year later he came to Boulder, CO where Phyllis was living. They got acquainted and were married three months later on July 15, 1967, and would have soon celebrated their 52nd anniversary.
He was a member of the Jaycees in Boulder and was part of a group that dressed up as clowns to entertain sick and underprivileged children.
He completed computer school in Denver and was hired on at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Facility near Golden, Colorado and worked there 35 years before he retired. He worked in many different computer fields while at Rocky Flats and his final assignment was as a Computer Security Engineer. Upon retirement they purchased a Victorian home in Ord, NE that they remodeled and added onto. Jim refinished all of the old woodwork and finished the woodwork in the new addition.
He always enjoyed fixing things around the house and learned many carpentry skills from Phyllis’s dad. He took great pride in taking care of the yard and decorating for Christmas, which he got many compliments for. He loved to refinish antique furniture and work with wood. He thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent in his workshop, building wooden toys for his grandson, Justin and always took a handful of cookies on his way to the shop.
He collected Norman Rockwell plates and books and loved Indiana University games. He was just beginning to teach Justin how to fish and spent several fun days at Aubles pond.
Jim and Phyllis loved to travel and went on many cruises. They made several trips each year to Johnstown, CO where their daughter, Lisa and granddaughters, Courtney and Alyssa live. He loved family time together and game nights with everyone. He was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Ord, NE and served on the missions committee for many years.
