Doris Olive Thompson, 97, of Taylor, Nebraska died February 16, 2019 at her home.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2019 at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell, Nebraska. Burial will be in the Chambers Cemetery at Chambers, Nebraska. Pastor Stan Gurney will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 – 7 p.m. at Hitchcock Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Taylor Fire Department.
Doris was born January 16, 1922 in Loup City, Nebraska to Wilbur and Myrtle (Pierce) Manley. Doris grew up north of Burwell. She attended high school and graduated from Nebraska City High School. She went to teachers’ school and taught several years. She married Vernon Thompson on October 10, 1941 in O’Neill, Nebraska. She lived near O’Neill until Vernon was honorably discharged from the United States Army. They then purchased their own ranch east of Swan Lake. They lived there and ranched until 2006 when they moved into Taylor. In 2016 the couple celebrated their 75th anniversary. Vernon died on June 25, 2017.
Doris enjoyed gardening, flowers, quilting, crocheting, embroidering and was a long-time member of the Sandhills Stitchers.
Doris is survived by three children; Virginia and Bob Carpenter of Sargent, Nebraska, Edna and Bud Muth of Viborg, South Dakota, and Adele and Terry Poe of Taylor, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Joy Marie Stewart; a brother, Walter Manley; and a sister, Mae Kunkel.
