Maxon E. Leth, 81, of North Loup passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at the O’Neill Care and Rehabilitation Center in O’Neill, Nebraska.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Mr. Jim Goodrich will officiate. Burial will be in the Cotesfield Cemetery. Military Honors will be presented by the Ralph R. Rich American Legion Post #285 of North Loup. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Family’s Choice. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Maxon Elmer was born June 22, 1937, at Cotesfield, Nebraska to Elmer and Francis (Stowell) Leth. He was raised in the Scotia area and graduated from Scotia High School in 1955.
Max served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959. He was a Seabee and was in the first crew to go into Antarctic to construct roads.
On September 17, 1957, Max was united in marriage to Sharon Verley at Grand Island, Nebraska. The couple lived in Grand Island until 1970, later living in various communities in Nebraska and Kansas while Max worked in the construction business. In 1978, they settled in North Loup. Max was the Valley County Road Supervisor from 1977 until his retirement in 2007.
Max wintered in Arizona and also traveled with his dogs. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and rock collecting and polishing. He was an avid horseshoe player and was inducted into the Nebraska Horseshoe Hall of fame in 2018. He was instrumental in the Horseshoe Tournaments at Popcorn Days and was also awarded the First Kernel. He was member of the VFW, Lyons Club and Nebraska Horseshoe Association. Max spent his time following his family in their activities and sporting events.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Kent of Grand Island, Curt and Diana of Albany, Oregon and Brent and Twila of North Loup; two daughters and a son-in-law, Tonya and Scott Gydesen of O’Neill and Ronda Edson and her special friend, Steve Stapaules of Fairbury; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Wayne Boilesen of Albion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon who passed away on April 27, 1986; a sister, Clare Hansen and two brothers, Jackie and Russell Leth.
