12/18/2018 – The Holty County Sheriff’s Office received notification on December 18, 2018 at 1:10 pm of a telephone scam. The scam involved an individual falsely posing as a Sergeant with the Holt County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer claimed the citizen had missed a court date and jury date in Holt County.
The scammer then wanted the citizen to get a prepaid card and give them the number off the back of the card. The scammer continued to instruct the citizen to take the card to the Sheriff’s Office to be reimbursed for the fines.
The scammer used a spoof program to have (402) 336-2850, the Holt County Sheriff’s Office number, to appear as the caller. Another number used by the scammer is (402) 316-2876 and falsely claims to be the Holt County Sheriff’s Warrant Division.
Sheriff Ben Matchett want to warn the public about this deceptive scam. If an individual were to miss a court date or jury duty, they would be notified by the respective courts. Sheriff’s Offices, or any law enforcement agency will never call requesting card information or as for information from the back of a credit card.
Fines and costs are paid directly to the courts and not through the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Matchett would like to thank the citizen that brought this scam to his attention.
