Al Currie, 88, of Ord passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2018, at the CHI Health Good Samaritan Health Center Hospital in Kearney.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. Father Mark Maresh will officiate. Cremation will take place following the service with Inurnment at a later date in the Trenton Cemetery at Trenton, Nebraska. Visitation will be prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested the Elks Scholarship Fund or the Ord Township Library. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Al was born on July 29, 1930, near Scandia Kansas to Fred and Margaret (Freed) Currie. Al graduated from Seaman High School 1948, in Topeka Kansas.
After High School, Al returned to Scandia and was employed as a heavy equipment operator and then began his career with the Bureau of Reclamation on February 28, 1955 in Wyoming. During his 40 years with the Bureau of Reclamation he had duty stations in Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado. Al retired in Ord, Nebraska as a Safety Engineer. He was very instrumental in the safety program while building the Calamus project near Ord.
Al was raised near the Republican River in Kansas and loved fishing and hunting. During his lifetime Al was a teacher, coach, friend, and leader to many of the people that he met. He coached little league baseball, taught archery, first aid, CPR and defensive driving. He spent countless hours helping his father-in-law and brother-in-law farm and harvest. From building demo derby cars to wood working, Al loved it all.
Al was also a dedicated volunteer. He was appointed to Great Navy of Nebraska in recognition of his services to the Red Willow (Nebraska) Red Cross. He was also an honorary Life Girl Scout for his services to the Goldenrod Girl Scout Council of Nebraska. Al was an active member of the B.P.O.E and was the Exalted Ruler of the Ord Elks Lodge. He was a lifelong blood donor and safety advocate.
Al married Helen Marie Proft in Belleville, Kansas on August 6, 1951, and to that marriage three children were born, Lea Ann and husband, Elza Doak, Lana and husband, Randy Richter, and Marc and wife, BamBe Currie.
Al married Linda Marie (Hubl) Hovey in Salida, Colorado on June 17, 1992, through this marriage Al became the father to Tracie (Hovey) and husband, Allen McClure.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; his children; nine grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, F. Dick Currie.
